The new year has begun and it brought a river of precipitation to establish its mighty atmospheric presence.  With it a reminder that, uncontrolled, large volumes of water will flow towards the lower levels making its own destructive path if necessary.

It also kicked off the celebration of the lunar year of the cat and rabbit, depending on one's culture, and a mighty green comet that last visited nearly 50,000 years ago.

Here is to a 2023 filled with possibilities for students, teachers, parents, administrators and educators everywhere.

As February marches on, and the new year begins to settle into our lives, we take time to acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments of African Americans, we join with the Asian community as they celebrate the Lunar New Year to welcome the year of the Ox, we tell our loved ones how much they mean to us during Valentine's day, celebrate President's Day reflecting on leadership, and have one last hurrah New Orleans style during Mardi Gras before taking penance during lent season.

The NFL season comes to an end with the Super Bowl game and racing fans rev up their engines as the Daytona 500 starts the new season of NASCAR.

Finally, as vaccines for COVID become available to the public, the world can slowly begin to retake control of the traditional aspects of daily life like dining, exercising, and even going back to school, while maintaining vigilance and caution with regards to possible surges for the foreseeable future.

February 2019

"Welcome February!

The new year is up and running.

January kicked the year off and now it's gone.  New year's parties, government shut-down, teacher strikes, polar vortex, all this and more has taken place so far this year, and it is only the first month.

February is dedicated to Black History Month.  Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Rosa Parks Day mark the start of the time to acknowledge the accomplishments and honor the sacrifices of the African-American community.

Asian cultures celebrate Lunar New Year and wish each other health, happiness, good fortunes, and long life.  Love is also at the heart of February in Valentine's Day and it is a most appropriate time for educators to reflect on the love they have for their profession.  How our love for teaching motivates us to educate students.

President's day should serve as more than a holiday and help to keep in mind the qualities of leadership needed for the highest office in the land, an office of honor that can humble, and test with trying times.

And finally, two events in two very different sports, the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500.  Yes, February is indeed a non-stop fast break that will lead into the madness of March.

February 2018

The month of February has been memorable.

To summarize:

It began with the Super Bowl where the Philadelphia Eagles prevailed over the New England Patriots.

Then it was followed by Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday thus marking the beginning of Lent.

Afterwards Presidents Day and the start of the celebration of the Lunar New Year, the year of the Dog.

And it concluded with us taking part in the CA EL Roadmap Review Committee as the California capital of Sacramento was blanketed by a late winter storm of cold air and rain, hail, and snow.

But all this was in the midst of a tragedy in a school in Florida that ended the lives of students and educators.

This month of February has reminded us just how precious every day of life is, and how it is precious that we continue to give our lives to education, as learners, as students, as parents, as teachers, as administrators, as advocates and stakeholders in education, and the importance that we all have in an interconnected information net where we must identify weaknesses and make prompt and efficient repairs, or face a continuing damage that deteriorates and vanishes into air over time.
