The days continue to grow longer as the seasons transition from the last days of Winter to the first days of Spring.

March has sprung up into our calendars and it is time for students and educators alike to put a spring into their step as we approach the last few months of the school year.

It has already been a busy month as an hour was lost during the spring forward to daylight savings time.

Across the country students organized a student walkout to show support for those students lost in the Florida tragedy.

Women's History Month serves to remind us of the significant contributions women have made in a variety of professional fields, society and human endeavor.

The festivities of St. Patrick's Day, with its green shamrocks, take place as we partake in the celebrations from the Emerald Isle.

Baseball diamonds, from little league to the pros, roll out their green grass fields as we root for our favorite teams.

Madness takes over as brackets are filled and Cinderella stories develop in college basketball.

All this and more goes on in March as education continues its forward progress towards the end of school, the promotion of students into the next grade level, and the class of 2018 prepares to don their caps and gowns and receive their diplomas, certificates and degrees.

As we welcome Spring, and await the arrival of the last school breather known as Spring Break, we take time to do some last course corrections and fix our headings before unfurling our sails towards the sunset of the 2017-18 school year.

Spring Break 2017

It is almost Spring Break at school, but before we all check out for a well deserved few days of rest and recreation, let's take a look back at what has been accomplished thus far this year, and look at what is yet to be accomplished in the weeks ahead, until we reach that end-of-the-year ceremony (no, not prom) graduation.

Two thirds of the school year is over.  The plans that teachers developed last summer, long ago, have by now been repealed, replaced, recycled, adapted and re-adopted to meet the learning needs of the students in the classrooms.  Students have endured a long winter where friendships have formed over many rainy day indoor recesses, classroom field-trips and activities, lab partners and  group work.

The final third of the year begins with Spring break and ends in celebration for those who achieve that final goal of education, graduation, when we honor students hard work and perseverance as they set forth to meet new challenges that will guide them to higher education and a career in their profession.

To all educators, students, parents, teachers, administrators...

During Spring (March)

We are concluding the Winter season by marching on towards Spring.

We take time to reflect on our educational achievements as we embark on to the last big 
break of the year.

We can grow roots, develop stronger trunks, and reach out with our leaves and branches towards the clouds of information that are forming in the skies.

When I first heard the word "March!" I didn't stop to think.  I reacted and then executed.  My classmates and I had been preparing for the school's sports intramural season, and each classroom would parade, by marching one lap around the field, until all classrooms in the school would have a turn.  At the end of the parade, once all classrooms had congregated, we would be dismissed to proceed towards our assigned athletic events.

This is what the month of March has come to represent to me in every single school year.  One last chance to get organized and demonstrate what we as students are capable of doing.  To take our individual educational potential and turn it into kinetic energy.  It would serve as one last reminder that there was still some time to steal a march on education for the remaining of the school year.

As Students, Educators, Parents, and Administrators march towards the end of the school year, March should serve to us as those starting blocks that propel us towards end of year success.
