October 2019

October brings its bright colors as the foliage changes from green, to yellow, to orange, and red as autumn sets in and leaves prepare to fall.

The bright orange pumpkins will soon illuminate doorsteps as they are carved into Jack-O-Lanterns in celebration of Halloween.

Nights begin to last longer yet the sun still has enough heat during the day that we must become aware of fire dangers.

Schools make preparations so students are ready to pursuit their own education as the last two months of the year (November and December) have a limited number of school days due to the upcoming seasonal holidays.

California reflects on the results of the California Assessment of Student Progress and Performance (CAASPP) as growth continues to be made yet much work remains to be done.

2018 Halloween

Wishing Everyone a Fun and Safe Halloween!!!

Need a STEAM idea to celebrate?
Look no further than Jack-o-Lanterns.

The science behind Jack-o-Lanterns requires knowledge of lighting, luminosity, brightness, and transparency & opaque properties.

Technology has made Jack-o-Lanterns safer through the development of light sources operated by batteries and LED lights rather than candles and open flames.

Engineering and Art design are a must if you want to achieve the best lighting effects for the design of your Jack-o-Lantern.

Through the use of precise mathematical calculations, a Jack-o-Lantern can be replicated and improved upon.

Happy Halloween

Here's to hoping that everyone who celebrates has a wonderful and safe Halloween this October 31st.

Some ideas to consider in lesson planning for Halloween include geometric shapes, lighting effects, pumpkin carving design, etc.  Here are some examples to consider:

  • How do shapes change the facial features of a traditional Jack-o-Lantern?
  • If the eyes are triangles, does the orientation have an effect on the expression?
  • How does the thickness of the pumpkin alter the need for a bright source of light to be placed inside the Jack-o-Lantern?
  • If the source is placed at the bottom, does the carving need to be adjusted to reflect the glow effect at night?

Enjoy, and again, be safe at night!
